The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
